Of Interest To Me: Apennine Chamois

Unknown-3I believe that not many people have heard of this animal including me, so this should be different. The Apennine is a subspecies of the chamois; a goat-like animal found in the mountains of Europe. They can grow up to 80 cm tall and have backward hooked horns on their head that can be 20 cm long. Their coats change color depending on the season and their diet consists of grass, lichens, shoots, fungi, and the buds of trees. The adult males prefer a solitary life, only approaching females during matins season while the females stay in groups along with the “kids”. ┬áThe Apennine chamois was said to have been hunted close to extinction until a program was created which led to the return of the chamois in the mountains of Italy. However, there is still a threat to the species due to long periods of genetic isolation resulting in very little genetic variation.

SSR Update

I just started a new book called Perfect, by Natasha Friend. I haven’t read much of it so I cant really come to conclusions and rate the book as a whole but I’ll rate what I have read. I would give this book 3 cupcakes. From what I have read, there’s only one problem and Natasha focuses on this one problem ALL the time. That’s the whole book, but as I said before, I haven’t gotten far and maybe there will be more to come. Otherwise it is an very interesting book about a girl that has an eating disorder. I’ve never actually had a friend who’s been through this and I’ve never read a book about it, so this book is different for me. It seem like it could get better now that Isabelle (main character) goes to a group and meets the most popular, most perfect girl in school/world also attending this “Eating Disorder and Body Image Therapy Group”imagesUnknown-2

Of Interest To Me: Tiger

Many people may know that the tiger is one of the most vulnerable and threatened specie in this world. According to the article that I’m using, there are possibly as few as 3,200 left in the wild. Tigers are the largest of all the Asian big cats and are one of the most culturally important and beautiful animals on this planet. Due to poaching, loss of habitat and conflict with people, the three main tiger species have become extinct and the tigers that exist today are subspecies of the Bali, Javan and Caspian tigers. These tigers can weight up to 700 lbs and be as long as 9 feet long. They are predators as we all know and mainly hunt on deer, wild boar, wild cattle and even young rhinos and elephants. They are also great swimmers and are able to kill prey in the water while swimming which is abnormal for a cat. Jumping as high as 5 meters and as far as 10 meters, tigers attack their prey by biting the neck and wont let go until it dies. Violent…. however, tigers nearly became extinct until 1930 when it became protected animal under the law. imagesBengal_Tiger1

Of Interest to Me: Red Giant Flying Squirrel

What can get better than a squirrel that flies? Sadly, this Red Giant Flying Squirrel in endangered for the same reasons many other animals are endangered; mainly the loss of habitat. It’s found from the eastern regions of Afghanistan into Northern Pakistan. Like any other species of flying squirrels, it has a membrane of skin between it’s legs which is used to glide distan20070815074655ces up to 75m (250 ft). ┬áThis specific squirrel is characterized by it’s dark red coloring and large eyes. (Animals with large eyes are automatically cuter; my opinion) When compared to other species of squirrels, this flying squirrel is large being an average of 422mm long. In the wild, it feed primarily on pinecones, leaves and branches. When in season, fruits and nuts are also part of it’s diet. The Red Giant Flying Squirrel is nocturnal and doesn’t hibernate but it does migrate to areas with more food.

SSR Update

The book that I’m reading now is called Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson. With the new rating system, I would give this book at least 5 cupcakes. This books has to do with 3 girls around my age and going through the same problems that I do. Because this book has many situations that any girl would go though at this age, it’s a lot of fun to read. Some of the situations that have happened, I’veUnknown-2 experienced, so it’s fun to make the connection. It’s full of excitement and a lot of drama. Girls dealing with guys, and then the three girls also dealing with their family at the same time. They eventually all meet together on a peach farm; what a coincidence. By the end of the book, I believe they will become really good friends because each individual character is so different than the other that they will learn from each other and become better people. I really like this book and I’ve read as much as I could in my free time. I would mostly recommend this to a girl, since the whole book is told from a girls perspective… but I really like it and I think any girl would enjoy this book. It is a moist, delicious, and fluffy cupcake!Unknown-1

Of Interest to Me: Giant Panda

I adore pandas. They are so cute! Well I adore a lot of animals but pandas are adorable. The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family and among with the world’s most threatened animal. As China’s economy continues to rapidly develop, the amount of bamboo forests keep decreasing. They used to be hunted for their fur and also used as animals to train in the circus but then pandas became protected by the law. They are still threatened by the number of bambo forests decreasing. Giant pandas primarily spend their life roaming and feeding in the bamboo forests and unlike the normal bear, pandas do not hibernate. These black and white animals with round heads and small black ears and white faces can grow to 150 cm long and weigh about 90 kilograms. 99% of the panda’s diet consists of bamboo and because this food doesn’t have much nutrition in it, they spend about 12 hours a day just eating and can eat up to 3500 stalks of bamboo a day. panda standing250px-Grosser_Panda

UnknownI like this rating thing, it makes it more interesting and it can show viewers how much the book really interests me! Exciting! The book that I’m reading is called The Silent Boy written by Lois Lowry. The way I rate my book is by cupcakes! I wanted it to have something to do with food since food is amazing! I could have done it with another type of food, but there’s so many things that need to go right in order for a cupcake to be delicious! Same for a book. The book has to keep you interested, it has to have a good plot and it has to be something that you enjoy. (And I enjoy cupcakes very much) So out of 5 cupcakes; five being, I couldn’t eat just four, so I ate another one because it was so delicious ignoring the fact that I’m stuffed or not, and one being, alright imagesthis isn’t as good as I thought it was going to be.

So for this book that I’m currently reading, I’m going to give it four cupcakes. Not awful, but not enough to stuff one more in me. A book that is worth five cupcakes is a book that makes me want to close my bedroom door and pretend nothing else exists except for this book and I. It’s a book that I can’t put down. This isn’t one of those books. I guess it could use a bit more action in it. It’s staying with the plot very well but it’s not enough, it doesn’t make me question about some things because I already know what’s going to happen. The cupcakes seemed a little flat, still yummy but not big and fluffy. But this is my opinion, I enjoy books that have drama and action in them. Maybe there’s some people that enjoy a book that gives them a smooth ride. If so, this would be your book.

Of Interest to Me: Dugong

I have never heard of this animal, but I was really interested in the name. At first I thought it said Dudong but then reread it and realized the real name. But I still, the creature is endangered so why not do it? The Dugong is a large marine mammal found in the coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific and Australia. It is also called a sea cow because it is the only animal that grazes on plants. The sea cow can reach over nine feet long and weigh close to 2,000 pounds! These animals are hunted for the reasons whales are hunted. For the meat, blubber, oil, hides for leather and their bones and teeth that are made into ivory artifacts, charcoal for sugar refining and medicine. Dugongs can live up to 70 years and females are found to be slightly larger then males. The skin on the Dugongs is tough, thick and smooth with a gray color to it. This mammel closely resembles to the Manatee with flippers and a dolphin with the tail.Dugong

SSR Update

I’m reading new book called The Silent Boy, wrote by a Newbery- Metal- winning author; Lois Lowry. This book seems really interesting, it is told from the perspective of Katy. She meets a young boy named Jacob who is very quiet but is very interested in animals. This boy, Jacob, is “touched” (21), and he and Katy form a unusual friendship.

Of Interest of Me: Coquerel’s Sifaka

I was always fond of the show Zoboomafoo when I was a kid, and one of the main characters is Zoboo which happens to be a Coquerel’s Sifaka or also known as a leaping lemur. This animal can be found on the northwest and west-central coasts of Madagascar. It is a medium-sized lemur with long hind legs and and upright posture. The body length of an adult is around 20 inches but including the tail, the average lemur can be 44 inches long while the average weight is about 11 pounds. The bodies of these animals are designed for tree dwelling rather then treecoquerel's sifaka swinging like a normal monkey. These animals have a way of getting around by leaping between trees using their hind legs. They can jump up to 30 feet in the air with a single jump. The Coquerel’s Safikas prefer dry, deciduous forests near ponds, rivers for their habitat. These animals are endangered due to it’s limited range. It has also suffered due from the destruction of forests for farmland development, logging, and hunting. In many areas it is now prohibited and there have been groups that raise and breed these animals in captivity.
