Of Interest To Me: Palawan Peacock Pheasant

The Palawan Peacock Pheasant is found on the Palawan Island in the Philippines. The male bird can reach up to 19.7 inches in length while the female only reaches 15.7 inches. The appearance of the males and females are very distinctive. The male has a long and pointed metallic blue crest, their facial skin around the eye is red with a white patch under the eye, the breast, mantle, flanks and wings are a dark metallic greenish-blue and black. The females however are a very dull color compared to the males. Their faces are pale gray, and the rest of the body is a dark brown. This unique bird feeds on seeds, grains, nuts, fruit, leaves, and insects. They happen to be very shy in the wild, but when in captivity, they adapt well. Females lay up to two to five eggs, and when they hatch, the male helps feed and raise the chicks unlike some birds. Palawan Peacock PheasantimagesDue to limited range, habitat loss(humid, coastland, deep forests), hunting and trade, this pheasant is an endangered animal.

SSR Update

I’m still reading the book, Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins. I have gotten farther in the book, but , I still give it two cupcakes out of five. It just doesn’t seem to be my book. I like books that had a sense of humor, action, and drama. This book is just taking it’s sweet time  to get to the bottom of things or to the point and it’s going so slowwww. The main character Maggie is still looking for a date and trying to get over her latest crush…on a priest. But being the nice guy that he is, Father Tim decides to help her find the right guy and sets her up on a couple of blind dates. Who knows where she might end up!n238530Unknown

Wow, those cupcakes look absolutely delicious —->

Their diet consists of rodents and other small mammels, lizards, and insects. These animals are in threat due to the loss of habitat, hunting, and collection for the pet trade. SSR Update

The book that I’m still reading is called Catch of the Day by Kristan Higgins. I give this book two cupcakes out of five. I’m not as drawn to it as I thought I would be. Normally, a book that I find fantastic, is a book that I can’t put down. However, with this book, I have put it down several times to do other things. It’s about a girl named Maggie who can’t find a boyfriend. And once she does find one, she finds out later that he’s a priest…She’s not all that excited about that, but still she loves him and carries on with her life. This seems to be the only situation going on in Unknownn238530the book. The book is revolving around Maggie and her boy problems and really…I’m just trying to get this book over with right now. I mean there is an interesting story line, but not enough to give it anymore then two cupcakes.

Of Interest To Me: Margay

The Margay is a rare cat mainly found in the rain forests of Mexico and Central and South America. The eyes are very large making the animal look very cute. It’s covered with brown spots and the fur is grayish to a cinnamon color. The Margay is a very skilled jumper as well as a climber. It is also sometimes called a “tree ocelot” and is the only cat species in the world that climbs down a tree head first like a squirrel.  These animals are also known to hang from tree branches with only one hind foot! Mainly nocturnal, but they images-1Unknownalso can be active during the day and it prefers to spend much of its time in the trees. This is where it mainly gets it’s food. By leaping through trees, they can catch birds, tree frogs, monkeys along with fruit. The main threats to the species is hunting for its fur and pet trade, and habitat loss due to deforestation.

Of Interest To Me: Pygmy Rabbit

The Pygmy Rabbit is the smallest known rabbit in the world. However, it is an endangered animal and the only confirmed population that exists today is in the Columbia Basin of Washington. These animals are a brown to slate color with a short ears and small tail like a rabbit you would find around here. The size of an adult rabbit can fit in the palm of your hand meaning that it only reaches to be about 9 to 11 inches long. On the other hand, the females are larger then the males. The Pygmy Rabbit feeds on mainly sagebrush and in the summer months they feed on grass and new foliage. Threats to the pygmy rabbit species include habitat loss due to agricultural development, predation, and disease. It is also a food source for some bird and mammal species in the area such as weasels, badgers, coyotes, bobcats and great horned owls. Unknownimages

SSR Update

81798-things_seenimagesThings Not Seen by Andrew Clements is the book that I’m currently reading now for my SSR book. With my rating system, I give this book 5 cupcakes. It is fantastic and it’s a book that I can’t put down. I would be done with it by now if I had more time to read the book but sadly I am not. But I guess that means I can savor the book, like I would with a cupcake. The main character in this book happens to be invisible; he is nobody. Nobody sees him and therefore nobody talks to him. He can’t participate in school sports, even worse, he can’t even go to school! But Bobby meets a girl around his age… she treats him like a normal person, she becomes Bobby’s only friend, she makes Bobby feel like he is someone, she is also blind. This story plot is great! This book is moist, fluffy and has an incredible taste. Five cupcakes!

Of Interest To Me: Eastern Cougar??????

The federal Fish and Wildlife Service recently declared the Eastern Cougar extinct…but is it really? The Eastern Cougar is a subspecies of the North American cougar and is said to be extinct. The large, (second largest cat in U.S.) long-tailed cats also known as mountain lion, panther are found in the United Statesimages-1and can live anywhere from the mangrove swamps to hardwood forest. They are also capable of living in the desserts and snow. In 1860, they were thought to be extinct due to farmers believing that they were a threat to humans and livestock. But scientist are concluding that the eastern cougar was erroneously classified as a separate subspecies in the first place. With genetic studies, many biologist believe that this is no difference between the western and the eastern branches of the cougar family. So, does that still make the eastern cougar extinct?
